Source

The incident beam, produced, conditioned, and defined before the sample. A walk along the source-stage devices; the sample and detection stages are documented as their own composed-fixture pages, the controllers that drive these devices are on the Controls page, and the supplies they draw on are in Operations. Each device pairs its human name with the EPICS handle, its key specs, and whether it is field replaceable. new marks a device not yet modeled in CORA; confirm marks a value taken from the docs that staff have not yet verified.

Source bending-magnet (confirm: historically a bending-magnet source; the post-APS-U source for 7-BM is not stated in the docs (SRC-1))

Enclosures

Enclosure Role Facility Permit signal
7-BM-A optics-hutch aps confirm: APS PSS search-and-secure permit signal for 7-BM-A, to be named (PSS-1)
7-BM-B experiment-hutch aps confirm: APS PSS search-and-secure permit signal for 7-BM-B, to be named (PSS-1)

Front end

The source and the first station shutter that admits beam to the optics hutch.

Enclosure: 7-BM-A.

Note

7-BM runs white, monochromatic, and focused beam in different modes; the beam mode is a per-technique choice, not a fixed property of the source (BEAM-1). The source itself is carried loosely as the bending-magnet beam, mirroring the 2-BM source representation, never a catalog Family.

Name Family PV Key specs Replaceable Status
Source Beam the storage-ring source feeding 7-BM; bending-magnet historically, post-APS-U source to confirm (SRC-1) new confirm
StationShutterA Shutter 7-BM-A station shutter; closed before the filters are moved (optics.rst) new confirm

Beam conditioning

The filters, chopper, and white-beam slits that shape the white beam and manage its heat load before the optics.

Enclosure: 7-BM-A.

Note

White-beam heat load is a 7-BM-specific concern absent at the monochromatic 2-BM pilot: prolonged white beam cracks scintillators and damages samples, so filtering and the rotary chopper duty-cycle reduction are routine mitigations.

Name Family PV Key specs Replaceable Status
Filters Filter water-cooled filter set in 7-BM-A; two filter units, up to two filters at once (optics.rst) new confirm
Chopper Chopper rotary chopper: two notched copper disks on a stepper (Motor 27), two notches per disk so the beam transmits twice per rotation; relative disk rotation sets the duty cycle; a 12 VDC photoeye picks off position and feeds DG645 #2. Reduces white-beam duty cycle to protect samples and scintillators. Bound to a loose Chopper family pending the decision on whether this is a new catalog Family or an existing Shutter / RotaryStage plus settings (CHOP-1).
new confirm
WhiteBeamSlit Slit white-beam slits; horizontal centre and size are repositioned per monochromator stripe (optics.rst) new confirm

Optics

The energy-selecting and focusing optics that condition the beam delivered to the experiment hutch.

Enclosure: 7-BM-A.

Note

Which of these optics sit in the routine pilot path, and the dual-energy split-stripe mode of the monochromator, are open (OPT-1). The polycapillary optics (for confocal fluorescence) and the channel-cut calibration crystals named in the docs are deferred until a confirmed technique needs them, and are not modelled here.

Name Family PV Key specs Replaceable Status
Monochromator Monochromator double multilayer monochromator (DMM), 6 to 18 keV; two Rigaku-coated Si substrates with three stripes (2.0 nm, 3.5 nm, split mixed) (optics.rst) new confirm
MultilayerMirror Mirror 7-BM-B single-bounce multilayer mirror; 2.1 nm and 4.0 nm coatings on a 200 mm Si substrate; white-beam mode, requires hutch DI cooling water (optics.rst) new confirm
FocusingMirrors Mirror Kirkpatrick-Baez focusing mirror pair (IDT, Si, Rh-coated, dynamically bendable); monochromatic focused-beam mode, requires a helium purge (optics.rst) new confirm

Safety shutters

The safety shutter gating the beam between the optics hutch and the experiment hutch.

Enclosure: 7-BM-A.

Note

PSS permit signals are APS facility signals, not named in the docs (PSS-1).

Name Family PV Key specs Replaceable Status
SafetyShutter Shutter safety shutter gating beam from 7-BM-A into the 7-BM-B experiment hutch new confirm
